Asha Ramesh—Yoga instructor
I always think of portraits like this one of Asha as payback for all the times things don’t work exactly as the artist plans them. I had a vision about this portrait of Asha and how it should look. I had the location and the composition pretty much set in my head, but the early January light just wasn’t happening. With a class starting in the yoga studio in less than five minutes, the sun popped through the trees. The wall where I wanted to execute the photograph became bathed in beautiful early morning winter light. When another yoga instructor passed through the patch of light and cast a shadow, it was just a matter of working her positioning into making this portrait, which has the qualities of a painting. Sometimes it just all comes together.
